Is it possible to cannibalize gear to craft something with similar purpose? If so, would a check be necessary?

Theoretically yes, I'd have to think on the how though and see if there's a process as defined in the book.

A check feels very appropriate at the least. Gimmie a note in your PF about what you wanna do exactly and I'll think on it.
